Graphic Design Intern - Education Abroad Center

The Graphic Design Intern creates the Education Abroad Center’s “image.”  You are responsible for creating appealing publicity materials that generate interest in the Center’s study abroad programs.  This is an opportunity to further develop your design skills in a supportive and professional environment.  The skills you gain from this internship will help you build your portfolio and prepare you for the professional world.  You will learn to work independently, gain technical and leadership skills and experience that will promote your personal and professional growth.  This paid internship requires 12-15 hours per week throughout the academic year at a Student Assistant II level.  Transcript Notation and/or academic credit are available for the internship.

Under the supervision of the EAC Associate Director and in consultation with EAC staff, design and produce posters, flyers and advertisements to outreach to undergraduate students.  This includes developing design concepts and selecting appropriate graphics and typestyles using computer design software. Produce displays, exhibits and “storefront” to publicize EAC programs and services. Participate in EAC activities, programs and services.  Attend staff meetings; work with other EAC interns on joint outreach projects.

Requirements
• Experience in designing posters, flyers, displays, publications.
• Ability to work with short deadlines and produce projects quickly.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
• Ability to elicit and understand others’ ideas and to complete projects by following these ideas and goals.
• Experience with graphic design computer software such as Illustrator and Photoshop.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule to meet deadlines.
• Ability to take initiative and to work independently with a minimum of supervision.

Internship: California Center for Cooperative Development

A cooperative is an organizational model used in community development that actively involves people in addressing the issues they want to solve—such as to improve their economic position; create home ownership or participatory rental housing; provide non-profit, high quality child care; to facilitate employment that meets their needs in terms of pay, job security, or work environment; to join together with other small business to increase market power—the issues are diverse but the framework for problem-solving consistently includes joining together with others to actively address shared issues.  This new non-profit Center helps people problem solve using the cooperative model.

Interns for this brand new non-profit can learn and assist with:
• All aspects of a non-profit business start-up and operations;
• Grant writing and fund raising;
• Assist with promotion and generating positive public relations;
• Assist with forming cooperatives that help people improve their lives.
• Organizing and planning educational events for a specific industry or social service sector

Educational Requirements and Skills
The positions are best suited for fourth-year or graduate-level students majoring in community development, business, sociology, psychology, education, cultural studies, or related fields.

Ability to communicate and present ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of diverse cultures; and possess excellent computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and databases.  Student intern must have the ability to work independently and be a team player.

Time Commitment
Internships range from 10-25 hours per week.  Hours are flexible but generally involve traditional work hours and some evening and weekend hours if schedules permit.

Central Valley Grassroots Guide Internship

PCL is updating our Central Valley Grassroots Guide, which includes a comprehensive directory of environmental and social justice organizations from Chico to Bakersfield. The intern would be responsible for updating and expanding the Guide and would also work with PCL staff to publish the updated Guide on the web.

This project provides an excellent opportunity to develop experience as a project manager. It is also a great chance to interact with environmental and community organizations throughout the Central Valley.

This is a volunteer position that requires a commitment of at least 10-15 hours per week for at least several months. A good fit for those with interest/skills in: publishing, website development, community outreach, environmental issues, database management.

Graphic Designer (LGBTRC)

The Graphic Design Intern is the LGBT Resource Center image maker. You will be responsible for the LGBTRC’s publicity materials and for creating the “look” that appeals to the particular audiences we hope to draw to our events and activities and to our physical space. Both printed flyers and website design can be part of this work. This is an opportunity to explore your creative side while working with supportive people in a unique, professional and fun environment. The skills you gain from this internship will serve you well when you leave the university for the work world. You will learn to work independently, gain technical and leadership skills and experience an organization that values quality of service and an environment that promotes personal and professional growth.

In consultation with LGBTRC staff, you will design and produce posters and flyers announcing LGBTRC programs and services. This includes developing design concepts, selecting appropriate graphics, typestyles, papers and colors; creating designs using a variety of computer programs and working with printing vendor throughout production process.

Produce displays and exhibits to publicize LGBTRC events and to disseminate information about gender and sexuality issues. Other design projects, as assigned.

Participate in all LGBTRC activities, programs and services. Work with other LGBTRC interns on joint outreach projects. There may be opportunities to attend national, regional, and state wide conferences/meetings.

Terms of Employment
• Attend and pass one Spring training: EDUC 160A-Social Justice course. The class will be Wednesdays 3-5pm. You must be able to attend the whole quarter. This will be a ten week, two-unit, P/NP course.
• Participate in a shadowing program 1 hour per week during Spring 2008
• Participate in a staff/intern training retreat Fall Quarter
• Participate in a weekly staff meeting starting Fall Quarter (must be available Fridays 10 am – 12noon)
• Attend regularly scheduled meetings with an assigned supervisor
• Adhere to the Statement of Inclusion, University, and LGBT Resource Center policies
• Work 12 hours per week; $8/hr from September to June
• Participate in the decision making processes related to the LGBTRC

Qualities Desired/Required
• Must be a full time registered student with good academic standing every quarter and maintain a minimum 2.50 GPA
• Coursework or experience in design, art, public relations, or related area preferred.
• Experience in designing posters, flyers, or similar publications for clients.
• Knowledge of and sensitivity toward LGBT and social justice issues and concerns. Ability to conceptualize and select designs appropriate to an LGBT center.
• Coursework or experience in areas related to diversity issues (ie: social justice, race, ethnicity, ethnic studies, gender studies, queer studies, cross cultural communication)
• High Interest and/or knowledge of social justice issues and the intersections of oppressions.
• Understanding and/or interest of LGBTIQQ issues and how they relate to broader social justice issues.

Project Coordinator (Local Government Commission)

The Local Government Commission (LGC) has an open position for a Project Coordinator to work on progressive land use, community design and resource management issues.

The Local Government Commission (LGC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, membership organization that provides inspiration, technical assistance, and networking to local elected officials and other dedicated community leaders who are working to create healthy, walkable, and resource-efficient communities. The LGC has developed a reputation for advancing innovative policies and sustainable planning and design strategies in communities throughout California.

The Position:
LGC’s Water and Land Use program helps communities integrate water, land use planning, and community design. There is an immediate opening for a Project Coordinator who will work within the Water and Land Use Program on a range of projects involving watershed planning efforts, and writing a guidebook for “water-friendly” development in the Sierra Nevada region.

Requirements:
Interest in land use planning and community design, water management, policy analysis, and collaborative planning efforts. Willingness to learn and work hard. Strong writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills. Dependable, accurate, and responsible. Self-starter, willing to take initiative.

Other desirable skills include:
GIS, Graphic Design (Photoshop/In-Design etc), developing presentations (PowerPoint), databases (Filemaker) and spreadsheets (MS Excel), economic analysis, policy analysis and public speaking. Most importantly, the Project Coordinator will need to be able to work as part of a team in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.

Job duties will include:

Description:
The Graphic Designer creates posters, flyers, advertisements and other visual materials for department productions, events, web as needed throughout the year. Also, designs and produces attractive bulletin board and vitrine displays. Helps with web content management and may help to photograph productions/events.

Qualifications:
• Requires demonstrated experience in graphic design.
• Must be responsible and detail-oriented, with ability to carry out several projects simultaneously.
• Must have strong interpersonal skills in order to communicate with diverse individuals, including professional directors, department staff, and student assistants.
• Must be willing to participate in demanding design process, which may include producing multiple versions of artwork.
• Must have excellent computer skills and experience using Adobe Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.
• Must be able to accurately crop and scale artwork for reproduction according to print requirements.

Under supervision, the Graphic Design Intern is responsible for:
• Designing or laying out professional campus print materials;
• Layout of files in InDesign and Illustrator;
• Preparing proofs for clients and making revisions;
• Preparing files for offset or digital output;
• Maintaining the file archives

Required:
• Knowledge of basic design principles, as well as Illustrator CS2 and InDesign CS2;
• Ability to learn quickly and apply new design and production skills;

Marketing Assistant (Undergraduate Admissions)

Position description:
Serve as assistant to marketing coordinator to research information, manage clerical and administrative tasks related to content in Undergraduate Admissions publications and Web sites. Duties include, but are not limited to: managing correspondence with students, staff and faculty of various departments; interview subjects and research information for creating Web site content; scheduling and monitoring photography sessions; maintaining central task list; and performing basic word processing for writing and editing simple drafts.

Requirements:

Graphic Designer (Campus Recreation)

Job Description:
Part of a student team of Graphic Designers for The Department of Campus Recreation publications. After initial consultation and design direction from the Publications Coordinator, the Graphic Designer follows style guides to design and prepare flyers, posters, brochures and catalogs for all Campus Recreation Programs. Designs and prepares 2-dimensional promotional material for display boards and sign standards. Designs supplemental artwork needed for website and email.

Job Requirements:
• Must have graphic design experience.
• Must have strong skills in typography.
• Individual must have promotional design skills, experience and knowledge in traditional layout and computer technology necessary for desktop publishing.
• High proficiency with Macintosh computers is required.
• Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Photoshop, In Design, and Illustrator. Digital media experience (Final Cut, Dreamweaver) is a plus but not required.
• It is critical that the candidate be self-motivated, work well under pressure and has ability to meet deadlines.
• Communication skills are essential as this position is required to collaborate with the marketing team and clients.
